Laparoscopy, also known as minimally invasive surgery or keyhole surgery, is a surgical procedure that allows surgeons to access the inside of the abdomen or pelvis using small incisions. It is performed using a laparoscope, which is a long, slender instrument with a light and camera attached to it.
During a laparoscopy, several small incisions, usually around half an inch to an inch in length, are made in the abdomen. Carbon dioxide gas is then pumped into the abdomen to create a working space and lift the abdominal wall away from the organs, providing better visibility for the surgeon.
Trocars: Trocars are used to create access points for the insertion of other instruments into the abdomen. They consist of a sharp, pointed tip and a sleeve that allows instruments to pass through while maintaining pneumoperitoneum (the presence of carbon dioxide gas in the abdominal cavity).
